General Surgeon Mineola | Dr. David Shin

Dr. Shin is a board certified surgeon, who specializes in advanced minimally invasive surgery and general surgery.

Dr. Shin was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States at the age of 3. He attended the University of California, Irvine as a Regents Scholar, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then completed two years of post-graduate research in laser and photodynamic therapy at the internationally recognized Beckmann Laser Institute, publishing several papers before attending medical school at New York Medical College.

Dr. Shin's training continued through his internship and residency at St. Luke's Hospital and Roosevelt Hospital, which are part of the Columbia and Cornell teaching hospitals, where he served as chief resident during his fifth year of training. He then furthered his training in minimally invasive surgery at the Long Island Jewish and North Shore University Hospital system, allowing him to specialize in advanced laparoscopic robotic surgery, complex hernia repair, including minimally invasive component separation (done by only a few surgeons in the entire country), minimally invasive removal of the esophagus for cancer, and other oncologic procedures.

Dr. Shin joined Nassau Surgical Associates in 2008, and through his working at Winthrop Hospital, he has been actively involved in teaching the surgical residents and medical students from SUNY Stony Brook.

He has also been actively involved in medical missions abroad, having visited several underserved areas.

His professional memberships include the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where he presented posters on laparoscopic training and special laparoscopic techniques in mesh repair of large, difficult hernias of the diaphragm.
