Dr. Halpern is a board certified general surgeon who specializes in benign and malignant diseases of the breast, abdominal and oncological surgery, and all forms of advanced laparoscopic surgery.
A Long Island native, Dr. Halpern graduated from Kings Park High School in 1984, where he was ranked third in his class academically. Dr. Halpern continued his studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL under academic scholarship from the Naval ROTC and served aboard the USS McCluskey during the summer of 1985. He received a Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 1988. Dr. Halpern received his medical degree from the Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago, IL in 1990. He graduated from the esteemed Honors Program in Medical Education, finishing in the top third of his class. While at Northwestern, he did research with cell wall receptors associated with breast cancer cells.
Dr. Halpern returned home to Long Island in 1990 to complete his medical training. He completed a five-year residency in General Surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital in 1995 and was Chief Resident from 1994 to 1995. He joined Nassau Surgical Associates, PC in 1995.
While at Nassau Surgical, Dr. Halpern has developed a large surgical practice. His technical expertise and continued dedication to medical education and patient care have allowed him to excel and become one of the leading surgeons in the local medical community. He has vast experience in multiple areas of surgery and currently performs over 1,000 cases annually. He has particular interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques and laparoscopic surgery.
Dr. Halpern is actively involved in resident and medical student education. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine. He has published several articles, most recently on hernia repair and radiographic imaging of appendicitis. Dr. Halpern has preceptored numerous surgical workshops, including live patient demonstrations of his surgical techniques. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as the International College of Surgeons and a member of numerous societies including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
